Pakistan didn't plan its solar revolution. Its people built it — out of desperation. Electricity tariffs surged 155% between 2021–2024. Solar panel prices collapsed to $0.08/watt. Pakistanis responded. Solar now powers nearly 25% of our utility electricity — one of the fastest clean energy transitions ever recorded. But the state's response is turning success into crisis. An 80% cut to net metering rates and a 10% GST on solar panels isn't slowing adoption — it's pushing consumers to pair solar with batteries and exit the grid entirely. Fixed costs then fall on whoever remains, tariffs rise, more people leave. Without intervention, this regressive transfer could reach $48 billion by 2034. Two interventions are non-negotiable: 🔋 Declare a BESS Emergency — Grid-scale battery storage is urgent national infrastructure, not a future aspiration. ☀️ Remove Solar Taxes — Solar is a necessity, not a luxury. Taxing it undermines our climate goals and drives consumers permanently off-grid. Pakistan emits less than 1% of global GHGs yet is among the world's most climate-vulnerable nations. We have an accidental green dividend. The question is whether policy will protect it — or squander it. The window is narrow.
